TOM’S CABIN 50th Anniversary Tour
Gary Lucas' Gods and Monsters (with Ernie Brooks (B) and Calvin Weston (Ds))— Japan Tour.
Since its founding in 1976, TOM’S CABIN has been a pioneer in introducing Japan to cutting-edge, cult-favorite artists—including Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, and Talking Heads. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, promoter Hiroshi Asada finally realizes a long-held dream: bringing Gary Lucas, the legendary guitarist of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, to Japan for this special tour.
TOM’S CABIN began with a simple mission: "to hear the musicians we love in intimate venues with exceptional sound." For half a century, we have championed "subtle but strongly loved" artists overlooked by major promoters. This Gary Lucas tour is both a heartfelt homage to Captain Beefheart and the latest evolution of the "NY Downtown Scene" that TOM’S CABIN has proudly introduced to Japanese audiences for decades.
Gary Lucas (Biography)
"The Thinking Man's Guitar Hero" — The New Yorker
Gary Lucas is a world-renowned guitarist, Grammy-nominated songwriter, and composer whom Rolling Stone has called "one of the best and most original guitarists in America." A true legend of the New York Downtown scene, Lucas’s career spans over four decades and defies genre boundaries.
He first gained international acclaim in the 1980s as the final featured guitar virtuoso in Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band. Following his tenure with Beefheart, he formed his long-running premier project, Gods and Monsters. It was within this group that Lucas discovered and mentored a young Jeff Buckley, co-writing the legendary anthems "Grace" and "Mojo Pin" for Buckley's multi-platinum masterpiece, Grace.
With over 50 albums released to date, Lucas is a relentless collaborator who has performed or recorded with a "who's who" of musical icons, including Lou Reed, Nick Cave, John Zorn, Bryan Ferry, Patti Smith, and Chris Cornell. His reach extends into world music and film, having performed his original scores for classic silent films like Dracula and The Golem at prestigious venues worldwide, from the Royal Festival Hall to the Library of Congress.
Recognized as one of the "100 Greatest Living Guitarists" (Classic Rock Magazine) and one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" (LRM), Gary Lucas is a true "guitar magician" whose sound continues to bridge the gap between avant-garde experimentation and soulful, psychedelic blues.
