The NHK Training Program for Traditional Japanese Instrumentalists was started by NHK (The Japan Broadcasting Corporation) in 1955, in order to nurture and produce high-level musicians in the Japanese traditional music world, as well as working towards a rich culture of music broadcasting. Since its commencement, the program has produced countless valuable artists over the course of over fifty years, drawing to a close in March 2010, with the 55th class being the last one. Over 2,000 people have graduated from the program, and the graduates have carried traditional Japanese music into the future in their respective fields. The 55th and final class has been holding a concert every September since graduation, titled
Shoshū no Yūbe (An Evening in Early Autumn). In addition to Tokyo, they have also held regional performances in Kumamoto and Sendai, with each performance featuring graduates with a range of different stylistic backgrounds. This will be the fifteenth concert of the series held by this group of dedicated musicians.
