Indian Rhythm Workshop Series
Improve your rhythmic sense and develop a deeper understanding of rhythm through learning Carnatic Indian rhythms. Over the course of five workshops, Carnatic rhythmic concepts will be introduced and taught by using the spoken rhythmic syllables called Solkattu recited over combinations of claps, waves and finger counts. The workshop will be taught without any instruments and the rhythmic ideas can be applied to any style of music. The workshops are open to acoustic musicians, computer-based musicians, composers and dancers; anyone who works with rhythm.
The workshops will be taught by Darren Moore who is an Australian professional drummer based in Tokyo. Darren studied Carnatic rhythms with South Indian master ghatam player Suresh ‘Ghatam’ Vaidyanathan and mridungam master T.R. Sundaresan. In 2013, Darren obtained a Doctorate of Music Arts from Griffith University in Australia which looked at applying Carnatic Indian rhythms to the drum set.
