As part of Japan Music Week Gamuso presents a distinctly international flavour for your aural pleasure. Tokyo legends The Watanabes return to woo you with their sunny indie delights, Flying in from Singapore we have the sultry and whimsical sounds of MONSTER CAT, popping over from Australia we have the delicate and beautiful acoustic styling’s of Stu Larsen and local rock goddess the wonder, the unique the hardcore Mana Hardcore.

Oh and yeah to kick things off we have some tall ginger guy and midget from Scotland called The Evangenitals, personally I have never heard of them.

SO come and get an international boogie on (or just laugh at me and the midget of mayhem make an arse of yourselves again).

Band Info

The Watanabes
The Watanabes are a Tokyo based indie rock band, with members from curvaceous island nations such as the UK, New Zealand and Japan, and other pretty places like Sweden. The band formed in 2005 in the orange-laden prefecture of Ehime, and 2 years later we packed up and shifted it to Tokyo, in search of new inspiration and regular trains.

We are happy to announce that our new album, `You`re dancing I`m absorbed`, is complete and now available. Recorded under the wise Glaswegian eye of producer Dave Naughton, the 12 tracks are a mixture of pretty lively indie guitar pop with a smattering of more stripped back, dreamy folk. Many thanks to the people who helped us get it done and we`re looking forward to giving the new tracks a crack on stage over the coming months.

MONSTER CAT

MONSTER CAT takes its name from the ‘bakeneko’, a cat with supernatural abilities in Japanese folklore. It is said a bakeneko will haunt any household it is in, menacing sleepers, walking on its hind legs, even devouring its owner and shapeshifting to take his place.

Yet, there are also stories that depict the bakeneko as a fiercely protective and loyal creature, readily sacrificing its life for its owner.

The band is inspired by this sense of the supernatural, the fascinating ambiguity of this relationship between creature and owner, stricken with a nature that is gentle yet volatile.

The shorter explanation would be that the band loves cats. Really fat ones. They also get turned on by other furry creatures, very dead philosophers and things that have the potential to get wet.

Last but not least, MONSTER CAT wants to eat your foetus.

MONSTER CAT is:

HENTAI CAT
vocals/guitar/tentacle rape

COPY CAT
bass/percussion/literary arts

PSYCHO CAT
vocals/guitar/periodic psychosis

BLACK CAT
vocals/keys/general paranoia

ZEN CAT
drums/good manners

PAPER CAT

Stu Larsen

Stu Larsen has no fixed address, no job, few possessions and little money - just a lot of generous friends who seem to let him sleep on their floor or couch, or in their spare room as he ventures onward. He appears to be on a journey of sorts, perhaps searching for something greater than can be found in one’s own backyard. The last months have seen him exploring & wandering all over the world. Through Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, road tripping with friends, playing unexpected shows in unexpected places, staying in the homes of old and new friends all along the way.

Somewhere amongst all that, there was time for the recording of a new EP affectionately entitled RYEFORD. Stu Larsen flew in good friends and fellow singer/songwriters Luke Thompson (New Zealand) and Tim Hart (Sydney / Boy & Bear) to Brisbane, Australia and headed west to an old farmhouse where they met up with engineer Caleb James (Leo Nine / Rhubarb) to spend the week in isolation, recording five new tracks for the EP.

With whispers of travels through Australia, New Zealand, Europe, UK and maybe more for 2011, who knows what the rest of this year will hold for Stu Larsen? It’s becoming apparent that not even Stu himself knows the answer to that question. Keep in touch as this adventure unfolds.
