Haruyuki Suzuki + Shibatetsu Duo

We have already completed our initial meeting and rehearsal session. The plan is to perform two sets: one of standard length (20–30 minutes) and another consisting of a rapid succession of shorter pieces.

Haruyuki Suzuki is a composer known for series of works involving punctuation, storytelling elements, and repetition. However, the piece that truly stunned me was one where he used live performance to mimic the sound of a vinyl record changing speed during playback. It was a sound experience unlike anything I had ever heard—where tempo and pitch shifted in tandem—creating a kind of "three-dimensional modulation" that went beyond the usual two-dimensional concept of key changes. Creating such a piece must have required hours of careful listening while manipulating record speeds. As an improviser, Suzuki is the type of performer who becomes deeply immersed in the sound. For this show, he is expected to use equipment such as CD-Js, signal generators, and a "talking machine."

In addition to my usual electronic keyboard setup (computer sound source + wah pedal + Sherman Filterbank), I might also use Max—which I’ve recently started learning—as a "mandolin-piano."
