In 1997, ASA-CHANG launched the solo project ASA-CHANG. His music—filled with a unique tribal yet abstract energy—has been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, attracting attention from media around the world. His collaborations with contemporary dancers in music videos also became an international sensation, leading to the 2009 music-and-dance production JUNRAY DANCE CHANG at Setagaya Public Theatre.
In 2012, Yoshihiro Goseki and Anzu Suhara joined the project, and the group expanded its activities beyond conventional musical boundaries through participation in the international performing arts festival KYOTO EXPERIMENT and by providing the ending theme for the anime The Flowers of Evil.
Beginning in September 2014, ASA-CHANG launched the live series Aufheben!, collaborating across disciplines with artists such as the world-renowned butoh dancer Ko Murobushi, filmmaker Kazumasa Teshigahara, manga artist Shuzo Oshimi, and creator Seiko Ito, further evolving and deepening the project’s artistic practice.
Since 2018, the group has also been actively performing overseas, touring in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Moscow, Lithuania, New York, Philadelphia, Utrecht, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. They have additionally been invited to the internationally renowned Venice Biennale Musica, continuing to expand their activities on a global scale.
