World Listening Day 2020: The Collective Field
Every year in July, people around the globe gather to celebrate World Listening Day. This year the Tokyo Phonographers Union in conjunction with Takenoma presents World Listening Day 2020: The Collective Field at Takenoma in Yokohama.
Now in its 11th year, the event will be held in and around the city of Yokohama and will feature sound installations and a live streamed multi-location performance. One pays little attention to the existence of “sound” in our daily lives yet we are being continuously surrounded and influenced by it. We encourage you to take this opportunity to open your ears and rediscover the sounds that fill our daily lives.
Due to COVID-19, attendance is limited but the performance will be live streamed. Please contact us for details.

World Listening Day is co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP) and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE). July 18 was chosen because it is the birthday of Canadian writer, educator, philosopher, visual artist, and composer R. Murray Schafer. His effort leading the World Soundscape Project and his seminal book, 'The Tuning of the World', inspired global interest in a new field of research and practice known as Acoustic Ecology.
