Established in 2012, Japanese supergroup enra is a performing arts company that defies conventions of space, time, gravity, and physics, through seamless synchronization of digital projection and physical movement. Exploring innovative artistic expression through the ultimate union of motion graphics and live performance using vibrant swatches of primary colors, Tetris-like geometry in multiple dimensions, and contrasts between human silhouette and digital art, enra‘s performances are futuristic and otherworldly. In fact, enra‘s own name hints at the supernatural: enra is derived from the name for the mythical shape-shifting and smoke-like Japanese spirit enenra.
enra’s projections are essential to their art, the integration of which create the simultaneous illusions of sensory interaction and projection mapping, while performing members of enra include specialists in martial arts, rhythmic gymnastics, popping/isolation, classical ballet, diabolo juggling, and street dance. enra achieved viral video success after their performance for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bid was picked up online, and since then enra has been invited to perform at theaters and festivals around the world, including the Cannes Film Festival in France, America’s Got Talent, a coveted spot on the 2015 New York Japan Society contemporary dance showcase, and enthusiastic ovations from Beijing to Buenos Aires, Memphis to Manhattan, Dubai to Detroit. They have performed in 29 different countries on 6 continents to overwhelming acclaim in five years since their founding.
VOYAGER is a brand-new concept show that delves into the odyssey of our own existence. This journey into the limitless reaches of space is a theme to which enra only alluded in the last production PROXIMA but now endeavors to realize more beautifully and expressively than ever before. In this new limited-engagement show VOYAGER, enra welcomes musician and actor Nobuaki Kaneko of the band RIZE as musical director and guest performer.
