Center

Center is an Alternative Space and Hostel in Tochigi / Japan run by sound artist Madoka Kouno and Experimental filmmaker Shinkan Tamaki. Our concept is “Multi-purpose space to explore” and we aim to be a base for people who want to discover a new world, a departure and arrival point for experimental artistic expression, diverse culture and information. Our goal is to be a one and only place in the world where new culture is fostered.

Center is located in Kanuma city close to Nikko, which once flourished as Kanuma-juku. The first floor is a renovated garage. We organize experimental music/video events, art exhibitions, and sell zines, books, experimental music CDs, etc. Food and beverages will also be offered, including drinks produced in Tochigi prefecture, Malaysian herbal soup Bak kut teh, and Chinese medicinal teas. During the daytime, it will be a free space where you can bring your own food and drink. Please use the space to take a break, work at your desk, etc. The 2nd floor is a hostel equipped with a lounge and a spacious mini-kitchen. We have one mixed dorm with bunk beds. In this fall, 2 private rooms will be completed.
