She completed a master’s degree in Musicology at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts. As a disciple under the patronage of the fourth-generation Takemoto Koshiji Dayu IV, she studied classical Gidayu shamisen and Gidayu-bushi under Nozawa Kinshi IV, Tsuruzawa Juteru, and Takemoto Komanosuke.
In 1990, she received the Newcomer Award of the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize. In 2009, as a member of the Gidayu-bushi Preservation Society, she was collectively designated as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property.
She has worked internationally across a wide range of fields including improvised music, contemporary music, theater music, film music, and media art, performing in over thirty countries worldwide.
Her collaborations include Otomo Yoshihide’s band ‘GROUND ZERO’, Heiner Goebbels’s music theater work “Hashirigaki”, and Basil Twist’s contemporary puppet theater production “Dogugaeshi”.
Her recordings include the CDs “Tayutauta” and “yumiko tanaka and roger turner at OTOOTO”, as well as the DVD “Yumiko Tanaka Music Performance”. She is also the editor and co-author of “Marugoto Shamisen no Hon” and co-authored Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Schola vol.14 Japanese Traditional Music”.
She received an ACC Grant in 2006 and was selected for the Agency for Cultural Affairs Overseas Study Program in 2008. Her concert “Yumiko Tanaka Recital 2024: The Sound World of Gidayu Shamisen” received the 24th Keizo Saji Prize from the Suntory Foundation for the Arts.

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, Gaku Yamada graduated from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin in Germany.
In addition to teaching at institutions such as Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music and Fukuyama Heisei University, he has served as an instructor at Noboru Muraji’s Early Talent Education Guitar School, the GG Academy of Gendai Guitar, and the Eisenach Music Academy, teaching a wide range of students from young children to senior adults.
He has also been invited as a guest lecturer at music universities throughout Japan, including Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo College of Music, Kunitachi College of Music, and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music.
Yamada has been invited to perform and give lectures at universities in cities across the United States, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, China, Vietnam, Singapore, and Indonesia.
He has appeared at numerous music and arts festivals in Japan and abroad, including the Suntory Summer Festival, Aichi Triennale, Tokyo Experimental Festival, Queens New Music Festival, and Randspiele.
His awards include the 20th Asahi Contemporary Music Award, the Excellence Award in the Recording Division at the 75th Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival, the Grand Prize in the Music Division at the 76th Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival, and the 21st Keizo Saji Prize.
