With each project through the last years, solo or in collaboration with other artists/disciplines, I have gotten closer to the core of my practice: the infinite circle where movement generates sound generates movement – which has brought a desire for an in-depth investigation of my performative presence through incorporating improvisation and dance into my practice.

Seijiro Murayama: 村山政二朗

1957年長崎生まれ。民族音楽学者の小泉文夫が担当していたラジオ番組を聴いたことをきっかけに音への関心を深める。1982年、灰野敬二のアメリカ・ツアーに参加し、本格的なキャリアを開始。

2000年以降はパリを拠点に、主にヨーロッパで活動。サウンド・アーティストのEric La Casa、作曲家でありアルトサックス／パイプオルガン奏者のJean-Luc Guionnet、ベルリンのトランペッターAxel Dörnerらとの長年にわたる協働で知られる。

いわゆる「自由即興」には批判的立場をとり、ブリュッセルでインプロヴィゼーション・コレクティフ「Skew」を立ち上げる。「同時ソロ」というコンセプトのもと、各国で即興演奏を展開。打楽器、ドラムセット、声を主な表現手段とする。

共著に『語法と愚者』（2010年）。東京外国語大学外国語学部インド・パーキスターン語学科卒業。実用フランス語技能検定試験（仏検）1級取得。

​Seijiro Murayama

Né en 1957 à Nagasaki, Seijiro Murayama s’intéresse très tôt au son en écoutant les émissions de radio animées par l’ethnomusicologue Fumio Koizumi. Il débute sa carrière professionnelle en 1982 en participant à la tournée américaine de Keiji Haino.

Installé à Paris depuis 2000, il développe principalement son activité en Europe. Il entretient des collaborations au long cours avec le sound artist Eric La Casa, le compositeur, saxophoniste alto et organiste Jean-Luc Guionnet, ainsi qu’avec le trompettiste berlinois Axel Dörner.

Critique à l’égard de la « free improvisation » au sens conventionnel du terme, il fonde à Bruxelles le collectif d’improvisation Skew, au sein duquel il développe le concept de « solos simultanés », présenté dans différents pays. Il pratique la percussion, la batterie et la voix.

Il est co-auteur de Gohō to Gusha (2010). Diplômé de l’Université des langues étrangères de Tokyo (section hindi-ourdou), il est titulaire du Diplôme d’Aptitude Pratique au Français (DAPF), niveau 1 (le plus élevé).

​Seijiro Murayama

Born in 1957 in Nagasaki, Seijiro Murayama developed an early interest in sound after listening to radio programmes presented by the ethnomusicologist Fumio Koizumi. He began his professional career in 1982, taking part in the US tour of Keiji Haino.

Since 2000 he has been based in Paris, working primarily across Europe. He has sustained long-term collaborations with the sound artist Eric La Casa, the composer, alto saxophonist and pipe organist Jean-Luc Guionnet, and the Berlin-based trumpeter Axel Dörner.

Critical of so-called “free improvisation”, he founded the Brussels-based improvisation collective Skew, within which he developed the concept of “simultaneous solos”, presented in various countries. He performs using percussion, drum kit and voice.

He is co-author of Gohō to Gusha (2010). A graduate of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Department of Hindi and Urdu), he also holds the Diplôme d’Aptitude Pratique au Français (DAPF), Level 1 (the highest level).
