We’re honored to announce that, following an invitation from Rinji Fukuoka, AHA has joined forces with Pataphysique Records for a very special event in Tokyo.

Introducing Pataphysique Records, founded in 1994 by Rinji Fukuoka alongside Shigeru Yokoto (final manager of Les Rallizes Dénudés).

In his own words…

Feb. 2000. “Pataphysique, “The science of imaginary solutions” is the method clearly defined by Alfred Jarry, a poet who slowly destroyed himself through excess, through absinthe and obsessive desire, and it is the path we must take.

Rather than seeking “wonder” and “terror” somewhere beyond fantasy, we realize them here and now, in the midst of everyday life, through music, our principal weapon…”

After a 13-year hiatus, Fukuoka resumed Pataphysique’s activities in 2015.

Oct. 2015. “…Thirteen years since we effectively ceased activity, in that time, days have flowed by, the world and its people have changed, countless things have arisen and vanished, but I couldn’t care less. Someone once spoke eloquently about ‘the death of music,’ but I don’t care about that either.One night, while sharing drinks, Ken Matsutani of our esteemed comrades at Captain Trip Records casually murmured to me: ‘I don’t care about the flow of the world, or what sells or doesn’t sell. I just keep doing it.’That’s fine, whether we’re the rearguard of rock or reactionary conservatives. We’re not standing on the edge of a cliff in tragic resolve, nor wallowing in resignation. Look. Listen.The living spirits are the most terrifying of all.

Borrowing Matsutani’s words once more, let me say it myself: ‘I just keep doing it.

’Here, we declare the revival of PATAPHYSIQUE RECORDS.

In this goddamned spectacle society, here, in Babylon Tokyo.”

Since then, Pataphysique Records has continued to produce genre-transcending works spanning rock, improvisation, and electronic music, including Fukuoka’s new unit Majutsu no Niwa and the poetry-reading group Pro to Contra, among many others.
