Samm Bennett here. I'd like to let you know about MYSTIC DOWN-HOME TOKYO STOMP, a new series of concerts I am curating, the first of which is happening at Sendagaya Loop Line on Friday, November 14.
All performers in this series will have a foot in traditional music (be it Americana, Mongolian, Japanese, Cameroonian...) but an eye toward expanding outward, toward bringing musical traditions into the future. A bit of experimentation, a striving toward something new, but with an ear to the roots as well. That's the idea, in a nutshell.
For our first event, I've invited TOMO, an excellent musician who works with banjo, hurdy-gurdy, guitar, and other stringed instruments, and does some singing as well, and Posusposu Otani, who plays accordion and jaw harp, and also sings in the hoomei (overtone) style. I'll be bringing my jaw harps, strumstick and various percussion to accompany my blues-tinged, Appalachian-esque song work.
There'll be solo sets, plus some duos and trios: MYSTIC DOWN-HOME TOKYO STOMP is also about collaboration: a meeting of musical minds and traditions, and finding something new in the mix.
