Satsugen Dōjōji – Solo Violin Performance by Naoki Kita
Ōkurayama Memorial Hall (7 min walk from Ōkurayama Station, Tokyu Tōyoko Line)
Violinist and composer Naoki Kita presents a powerful solo performance inspired by the classic Japanese legend Dōjōji—a tale of love, deception, obsession, and tragic transformation. The word “satsugen” refers to bowed string instruments, and in this performance, Kita’s violin becomes a voice of raw emotion and ancient memory.
About the Story
A young woman falls in love with a handsome traveling monk who takes shelter at her family’s estate. Promising to return, the monk departs—but never comes back. Consumed by longing, the woman realizes his promise was a lie. Her sorrow and rage transform her into a serpent, and she sets off to pursue him. Reaching Dōjōji Temple, where the monk has taken refuge, she climbs the stone steps and finds him hiding inside a great temple bell. Overwhelmed by her obsession, she wraps herself around the bell and burns them both in the fire of her desire.
This ancient tale of spiritual intensity and human passion is still told today in picture scrolls and oral storytelling traditions in Japan. Naoki Kita reimagines it through music, evoking each character’s inner world with piercing clarity.
