?AARON ANSTETT "WHAT NOW" POETRY BOOK LAUNCH AT MORGAN SALON
Friday, Aug. 2, 7:30pm (door 7pm) [this is Close Encounter #18]

Congregate, discombobulate, nay celebrate birthday boy’s AA’s recently published long poem WHAT NOW, described as a “…full-throttle advancing steeped in unflinching grace and stunned luminescence…” (Maureen Owen) & “Even with his epic disrespect and cosmic belly laughs he is …a poet of great humanity and hope.” (Philip Levine). Emcee [squared] Taylor Mignon will offer some poesie in support, with rising special voice guest, Charlotte Husnjak. Samm Bennett and Morgan Fisher will add thrilling sounds where appropriate. There will also be a short, bilingual homage celebrating Japanese poet, Shiraishi Kazuko (1931-2024).

AARON ANSTETT is the author of nine books,  including This Way to the Grand As-Is: New and Selected Poems, Late-Stage Everything, and most recently a long poem, What Now. As the inaugural Pikes Peak Poet Laureate, he instituted an ongoing project that places anthologies of poems by local writers in waiting areas. He serves as the poetry editor for an international quarterly with a handsome physical presence and goofy name, Exacting Clam. For the past few years he has organized several poetry postcard series, including in Tokyo. He and his wife, Lesley, a 2023-2024 Fulbright scholar, currently reside on the U Tokyo Komaba campus but all-too-soon will return to Colorado.

TAYLOR MIGNON established Tokyo Poetry Journal by editing numbers 1-6, including his special issue Japan and the Beats and on Butoh & Modernist Poetry. His recent books are VOU: Visual Poetry Tokio, 1958-1978 (Isobar Press) & Visual Poetry of Japan: 1684-2023 (KERPLUNK!). He’s finishing a book of lexical poetry and modernist photography by Tsuji Setsuko for Isobar Press.

*** Entry fee includes a copy of the book WHAT NOW itself: a bonus “rube haiku” post card signed and numbered by the author; plus generous amoints  of wine, tea and snacks.

The venue, Morgan Salon, is the personal art/music studio of British keyboardist Morgan Fisher (Mott the Hoople, Queen, Yoko Ono, etc.). It is just a five-minute walk from Daitabashi Station (only 2 stops by local train from Shinjuku on the Keio Line).

ENTRY is 3000 yen, payable at the door (cash only please).

EMAIL RESERVATION IS APPRECIATED (see below) as seating is limited to 30 persons, but of course last-minute, unreserved attendees are also welcome!

Details

Just two stops from Shinjuku on the Keio Line, Morgan Salon is the personal music/art studio of Morgan Fisher, a resident of Tokyo since 1985. Morgan is a British keyboard player and has played with many well-known bands since the 70's, including Mott the Hoople and Queen, and Japanese artists Yoko Ono, Haruomi Hosono, Yellow Monkey, The Boom, Kina Shoukichi and others. From 2003 to 2013 he performed a series of 100 solo ambient improv shows at Superdeluxe (Nishi-Azabu), featuring his collection of vintage analog keyboards and projections of his abstract light paintings. In 2013 he began a new series of solo concerts in his studio. He also invites other musicians and artists to give performances there, in the spirit of the salons of Paris in the 20's, or the lofts of New York in the 60's.
