This album is dedicated to Carlos Garnett (ts), who passed away last year (March 3, 2023).
Coincidentally, I met Carlos Garnett in New York when he was my age (57). At the time, Carlos was recovering from depression and practicing hard to return to performing.
Carlos' saxophone playing was so powerful that it could not be matched by such young players as Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman, who were emerging in the jazz world at the time, and he had the aura of a "real monster".
I became a regular member of his band and played with him for the next 15 years. Throughout that time, his energy, creativity, and above all, his passion for music showed no sign of waning. I consider it a great source of inspiration for my music career and a great honor to have played drums in his band for so long.
Such a giant of a man passed away last March at the age of 85.

On the other hand, would I, now 57 years old, be able to have such a high spirit as he had back then? When I was driven by such self-doubt, I felt as if he were saying to me, "Shingo, you've still got a long way to go!" This album is a collection of six pieces carefully selected from our performances at the Shinjuku Pit Inn, where we performed in memory of our friend who was in heaven.

The title of this album, Big Brother, is what I used to call Carlos in my emails to him. I had originally written Mr. Garnett, but he said, "Shingo, don't be so formal, just call me Brother," so I decided to add Big to it out of respect for him.
