Details

Javier Areal Vélez is an Argentinian composer and improviser who performs mostly on electric guitar, with or without things stuffed between its strings.

His approach relies heavily on a primal technique that emphasizes timbre and rhythm, and avoids traditional forms in favor of intensity, dynamic contrast and general strangeness. The physicality of his interactions with the guitar creates sonic outcomes not usually defined by any specific genre.

He’s part of Calato, a loud electric quartet of improvised and composed pieces. Former projects have included leading the bizarre pop band El Helicóptero and noise/postpunk trio COSO, and being a founding member of Buenos Aires’ Improvisers Orchestra and Enjambre de Guitarras.

As an improviser, he has given concerts alongside musicians such as Audrey Chen, Paal Nielsen Love, Richard, Scott, Chris Pitsiokos, Andrew Drury, Simon Hanes, Julián Bonequi, Jack Wright, Michael Foster, Theo Nabicht, Cecilia Quinteros, Christine Schörkhuber and the London Improvisers Orchestra.

Javier has performed extensively in Argentina and toured across Uruguay, Mexico, Brasil, USA and Europe. He attended residencies at Fundación Telefónica, Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas (Argentina), and Music Omi (USA).

His music can be found on labels around the world such as Have you said midi? (Ita), El Silencio (Chile), Jardinista! (Arg), PSH Ediziones (Arg), Stereo-Neg (USA) and Buh Records (Perú), Audition Records (Mexico/Berlin) and Geweih Ritual Documents (USA).

With Jorge Espinal, he curates the experimental music series Adoba Tritura Machaca, which has held many concerts for international and Argentinian musicians since 2014 in diverse venues of Buenos Aires. He was part of the coordination of the Contemporary Music Festival of Teatro San Martín and continues his work producing the Colón Contemporáneo program of Teatro Colón.
