Brian Allen

Originally from Texas, Brian Allen performs as a solo trombonist, 
in duo with Jacob Koller and Hernan Hecht, with Brainkiller and 
other artists in creative music such as Dave Ballou, Cyro 
Baptista, Anthony Braxton, Gerald Cleaver, Mark Dresser, Ellery 
Eskelin, Satoko Fujii, Drew Gress, Dominique Leone, Tony 
Malaby, Tom Rainey, Roswell Rudd, Nate Wooley and Creative 
Opportunity Orchestra. He has performed across North America, 
Europe and Japan at Roulette, The Stone, Porgy & Bess 
(Vienna), Les Siestes Electroniques (Toulouse), Gezmataz 
(Genova), Vive Latino, Festival Aural (Mexico City), Bang On A 
Can Marathon, College of Santa Fe Electroacoustic Festival, 
Carnegie Hall and CBGB's.

Brian received music composition residencies from Cité 
Internationale des Arts (Paris), Diverse Works (Houston), a Meet 
the Composer Global Connections Grant to Mexico and his 
amplified trombone recordings were featured on NPR's Sound 
Clips. A recipient of ASCAPlus Awards and composer for 
VoxNovus 60x60, Brian has works commissioned for wind, jazz, 
chamber, trombone and percussion ensembles performed at 
Tanglewood Institute, International Trombone Festival, Cité 
Universitaire (Paris), Society for Composers (Rice University), 
Eastern Trombone Workshop, Texas Music Educators 
Association and Big 12 Trombone Conference.

An artist/clinician for Edwards Trombones, Brian has taught 
privately and given workshops at more than 50 universities and 
high schools including Harvard, Berklee, Boston University, 
Luzern Conservatory, Jazz Institute at Anton Bruckner University, 
Prague Conservatory, UNAM, Oklahoma State, Florida State and 
Arizona State University. He was instructor of brass, jazz and 
electronic music classes at Brazosport College and Oregon 
Festival of American Music.

In 2000 Brian started Braintone Records, releasing six cds to 
date. For years he was a DJ on the venerable KTRU Jazz and 
Improvised Music Show

As a writer, he has a book with poet Guadalupe Galván entitled 
"Vals", published by Editorial Praxis. Guadalupe and Brian (L&B) 
design books, clothing, postcards, art, performances of poetry 
and music, and run Cafe Aurora in Mexico City.

Brian studied trombone with Don Lucas and composition with 
Mary Jeanne van Appledorn at Texas Tech University, receiving 
a BM in Performance ('98) and MM in Composition ('05). He 
attended the Banff Institute and summer workshops at University 
of North Texas. He has also studied with master musicians 
Roswell Rudd, David Liebman, Ellery Eskelin and Milford Graves.
