(Los Angeles, CA/ May 15, 2014) Grammy award winning Big Bad Voodoo Daddy kick off their summer tour season with shows at the famed Blue Note Tokyo on June 5, 6 and 7th. The multi-platinum selling band will be performing two shows each night and offering audiences a selection of music from their various recordings that span a twenty year career.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach has helped them forge their own songbook of original dance tunes. A sound that NPR’s etown fittingly describes as “a one-of-a-kind vintage sound… colorful fusion of classic American sounds including jazz, swing, and dixieland mixed with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture.”
Critics like the Wall Street Journal “By focusing on that moment in the mid-1940s when swing began evolving into R&B and then rock, bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy went a long way in the movement to reconnect jazz with the popular audience. … There's a lot to be said for a band that offers a swinging, danceable mix of Count Basie ("The Jitters"), Randy Newman ("It's Lonely at the Top") and Jon Hendricks ("Gimme That Wine"), together with leader Scotty Morris's engaging originals” and Jazz Weekly “This is the kind of music that initially got me hooked on jazz many moons ago. The jump/swing of guys like Louis Jordan or Cab Calloway … if you want to remember why you enjoy music, go no further” have also praised their music.
Described as Tokyo's best venue for live jazz, a cousin to the famous Blue Note New York club, this will be the band’s second trip to Japan with the opportunity to grace the same stage as Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Oscar Peterson and Maceo Parker to name a few.
The band will be performing an array of material including songs from their ninth studio album Rattle Them Bones (Savoy). That album, released in late 2012 helped put Big Bad back at the top of the Billboard Charts, with the highest debut at # 2 (just behind Paul McCartney’s reign) on the Billboard Jazz Album Chart and hit an impressive #1 on the Jazz Album Chart on both iTunes and Amazon. Jazz Times called Rattle Them Bones “a compelling reminder that this is a collective of superior players, deserving of attention outside of the niche they helped spawn.”
Since their arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at LA’s Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, named famously after an autograph by blues legend Albert Collins, has sold millions of records while their music has appeared in hundreds of movies and television shows. They’ve performed to sold out crowds at the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Hall, Lincoln Center, Chastain Park and Constitution Hall, to name a few, and have appeared as special guests with the great symphony and pops orchestras throughout the US. The band’s career milestones have included appearances in the Super Bowl half-time show, writing theme music for ESPN and network television, and performing for three American presidents. They have appeared on numerous TV shows from the Tonight Show to Conan, Dancing with The Stars to Superbowl XXXIII.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy features Morris (vocals, guitar, banjo), Joshua Levy (piano, arranger), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (acoustic bass, vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet, flugelhorn), Karl Hunter (alto and tenor saxophones, clarinet) and Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone, vocals).
