 Naoto Yamagishi

Naoto is in search of music before its word and concept were formally defined. A music free from formal constraints, traveling between places with flowing motions and sounds initiating from daily life – its rhythms, sonority and space.

Naoto started playing drum at the age of 13 and studied under Takuya Abe in Japan. In 2011, he moved to Rennes, France. After doing musical activities in Europe, he returned to Japan in 2014. He collaborates with various artists regardless of genres – musicians, dancers, poets, photographers, painter, calligraphers, Ikebana the Japanese flower arrangement artist, media artists, ceramic artists,,,etc – from Japan and overseas. Also he is making music for the dance pieces and video works. His major projects include ‘Ensemble Toyomu’with Yoko Ikeda / viola, Chiho Minami / bandoneon, Misaki Motofuji / baritone sax, Fumi Endo / piano and Hideo Ikegami / contrabass, ‘Aru’ with a dancer Mamiko Hosokawa, ‘Shoju’ ( 松樹 ) with a Japanese calligrapher Setsuhi Shiraishi, an Ikebana flower arrangement artist Oshun Tsukagoshi and Biwa player Rieko Fujitaka, ‘En Route’ with a painter Akiko Ueda, ‘ GARBAAAGE ’withLauri Hyvärinen / guitar ( Finland ) , and more.

 In 2015, he founded the collective Toyomu based in Saitama pref, is organizing the concert series around / in Tokyo and the tour in Japan for the artists overseas. And he founded a label Yabuki Records in 2020.

In January 2024, as part of the project ARU with a dancer Mamiko Hosokawa, together with 8 dancers and 6 musicians, they created and performed " 聞こえない波 / Inaudible Waves'' at Kobe KIITO hall, which puts dance and music on equal terms.

She completed her master’s degree at the Tokyo University of the Arts (majoring in musicology). With the renowned Bunraku master Takemoto Koshiji IV as her guardian, she studied Gidayu shamisen and Gidayu-bushi under Nozawa Kinshi IV, Tsurusawa Jūteru, and Takemoto Komanosuke, training in classical repertoire. She received the Minister of Education’s New Artist Award at the 1990 Arts Selection Awards. In 2009, as a member of the Gidayū-bushi Preservation Society, she received comprehensive certification as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property.

She is active in various fields both in Japan and abroad, including contemporary music, fusion, rock, free jazz, noise, improvised music, theater music, film music, media art, etc., and has performed in 30 countries worldwide. She has participated in Yuji Takahashi’s band “Ito,” Yoshihide Otomo’s band “GROUND ZERO,” Heiner Goebbels’s musical theater piece “Hashirigaki,” Basil Twist’s contemporary puppet theater “Dogugaeshi,” and the soundtrack for the Hollywood drama “SHOGUN,” among others. She has released the CDs “Tayutauta” and “Yumiko Tanaka and Roger Turner at OTOOTO,” the DVD “Yumiko Tanaka Music Performance,” and edited and authored the book “The Complete Guide to the Shamisen.” She is also a co-author of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “schola vol. 14: Traditional Japanese Music.” She was an ACC Grantee in 2006. Recipient of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Special Overseas Training Program in fiscal year 2008. Received the 24th Keizo Saji Award from the Suntory Foundation for the Arts for “Yumiko Tanaka Recital 2024: The Sound World of the Gidayu Shamisen.” Former associate professor at Hyogo University of Teacher Education; former research fellow at the Center for Research on Traditional Japanese Music, Kyoto City University of Arts.

Since her debut performance in 1981 in Tokyo, Tanaka has been very active as a Shamisen player and vocalist, not only in the world of traditional Japanese music, but also in contemporary music, new music and theater.

Tanaka has participated in several music groups, including the traditional Japanese instrumental ensemble Pro Musica Nipponia led by composer Minoru Miki, HANIWA ALL STARS led by Kiyohiko Senba, the group ITO, led by Kazuko Takada and produced by composer Yuji Takahashi, and the band Ground Zero led by turntable and guitar player Yoshihide Otomo.
