Kynan Tan is a musician and sound artist who produces haunting, ethereal music through combinations of acoustic instruments, computer software and electronics. He is interested in the areas of interactive installations, audio / visual works and live electronic music performance. Currently he is using max /msp to create programs for performing with acoustic instruments, analysing images or video and interacting with performers as a method of installation and creating new musical instruments. Recently Kynan traveled to Europe and performed solo on laptop and vocals at the regular concert series Salon Bruit (Noise Lounge) in Berlin.
His music works mainly take on the form of ambient, minimal and atmospheric works, recorded works have provided the soundtrack for many short films and dance pieces. Kynan is an award winning film composer, having been presented Best Soundtrack at the Revel8 Super8 Film Fest as part of the Revelations Film Festival, for his score of “Wrong Birthday Surprise”.
Musical groups have always Kynan’s focus outside of and in addition to his composition. The Vice Chancellors are his own psychedelic band who have released two CD’s and toured Melbourne. Kynan also had a brief stint in Will Stoker and the Embers while they won the National Campus Bands comp, toured Melbourne and played at the Big Day Out. Kynan also sometimes frequents the noise band Versificator, electroacoustic act Gumby and Friends and various other electronic ensembles. Difficult Second Novel is Kynan’s newest electronic collaboration with the enigmatic Brett Murray.
