- short bio

Jacques Demierre
Jacques Demierre is a pianist, composer and improviser. Whether acoustic or electroacoustic, respectful of the frames of traditional writing or freely improvised, his experimentations can be music just as well as sound poetry and sound interventions in situ. They are nonetheless all moved by the same search for awareness of sound. Author of numerous pieces for ensemble or voice, the pianist Demierre also readily explores the evocative force of the most quotidian noises. While expanding the sound possibilities offered by the piano instrument, Jacques Demierre explores ways in which it approaches the field of language. His critical reflection develops a highly transversal and “interdisciplinary” conception of music, which has brought him to work with a number of musicians from very diverse backgrounds.

Jacques Demierre is the 2007 laureate of the Ville de Genève Music Award.

Solo or group projects, in Europe, United States, South America, Japan, Canada, alternate between concerts and sound performances, audio pieces, collaborative performances, site-specific installations.

Frequent collaboration with other artists (Chris Mann, Christian Marclay, Barre Philips, Urs Leimgruber, Thomas Lehn, Axel Dörner, Fritz Hauser, Andrea Parkins, John Butcher, Brandon Labelle, Butch Morris, Okkyung Lee, Peter Evans, Carlos Zingaro, Gunter Müller, Jaap Blonk, Barry Guy, Sylvie Courvoisier, Rhodri Davis, Paul Lovens, Doro Schürch, Phil Minton, Elliott Sharp,...)

Recipient of many commissions (Festival d’Avignon, Swiss Radio Espace2, Teatro Argentino de la Plata, Tage für Neue Musik Zürich, Festival Archipel, Donaueschinger Musik Tage, Festival Les Amplitudes, Festival Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon, ...)

His work is published by Tzadik (John Zorn’s label), Héros-Limite, Psi, Victo, jazzwerkstatt, Leo, Plainisphare, Creative Sources, INSUB., Intakt, Bocian Records, bardem, Unit Record, stv/ams, and his scores are available from SME/EMS.

Some concert reviews
The recent concert in Zagreb by three European masters of free improvisation, pianist Jacques Demierre, trumpeter Axel Dörner, and accordionist Jonas Kocher, was one of those rare occasions when ordinary, oft explored and experienced objects and loci take upon alien and almost incompre- hensible qualities. [...]. The trio’s game is a patient one, not so much trying to reach a goal, rather concentrating on the “here and now,” on listening to one another. Reacting and negating. Request- ing and responding. The odd flashes of compositionally recognizable, familiar arrangements ap- peared and disappeared so quickly that they only seemed timed and premeditated. Signs of a fantas- tic synergy and understanding. The hallmarks of what we might call instant composition.Antonio Poscic, published in The Free Jazz Collective May 15 2016 .
